I recently attended Hair M as my gf purchased me a coupon for the Kings cut treatment, It was good for 1 haircut, styling, hot towel shave, and scalp massage- costs about $70 normally. My experience made me wonder exactly why there are so many good reviews here, however it turns out that Hair M gives discounts for customers who leave good reviews. As I walked in, they offered my my choice of bear or wine, nice touch I assumed. The room looked great and there were 3 people greeting me. That was the best treatment I received that day. My stylist didnt really seem very talkative or friendly, she just laughed at every dumb-joke I said to her and rushed through my haircut without a word. I really would have preferred more attention to detail on my hair for a "kings treatment". I asked her to use 1 size lower on her clipper settings to make my hair shorter and she seemed irritated with me. My shampoo treatment consisted of the overuse of tea tree oil to make your head tingle. When I told the sylist what way I wanted my hair to look like she disregarded it and made me look like every other 45 year old man who walks into the shop (I am in my early twenties), which really made me feel like they have only 2 types of haircuts available. There was no comment about what specific details to work on, or what "I" would like out of my haircut. Overall the cut looked like the exact same thing I would have gotten from a $10 barber, in fact-much worse as there was no fading or leveling to my hair whatsoever. My scalp massage was uncomfortable and again felt rushed, I was never asked at any point if I was enjoying it or how I would like it done, they again used so much tea tree oil I was coughing and couldnt feel half my massage anyway. (fun fact- tea tree oil is also toxic to living organisms, so enjoy your over-sterilized head). The music was a cheap- "soothing sounds" cd that most gift shops sell which consists of chirping birds, water noises and bad harp playing, which kinda seemed like something a grandmother would prefer, not exactly men. Finally, they told me they could not perform my hot-towel shave, as "she didnt have time". Excuse me?- but for a $70 mens hair "appointment" I expect you to make time and be prepared. I had even told them that I showed up that day to look my best for an upcoming date. I left looking like an unkempt- 45 year old hobo. Even my gf was upset with my look. The last straw came from when it was time to leave, they said "your finished" and turned and walked off. Not a "goodbye"- not a "thank you", not even a head nod. The only lady still standing there was staring at a computer and was too busy to even watch me walk out the door. To everyone else- dont go here. I know I never will again. I will get my hair cut at the cheap place at the mall nearby my home where the entire staff bowed to me when I walked in.

Hear me out on this formula: Call a place Hair[em] (really, lets go there!), give guys alcohol (really!), Have very purty girls flirt and touch mens heads (hey now!) and put stereotypes all over the place (Sports on TV.) Oh and ask the men to kindly not molest or harass their workers using this formula. Amazing this all works, in 2014, without lawsuits flying all over the place. This says more about the microcosm of how ridiculous humans are than actually cutting hair! And I had a great time, despite all this! The woman that cut my hair was intelligent, flirty, and did a fine ass job of doing it, telling me things about my hair that I had no idea of, a good 4 decades in now. I felt a trickle of sweat by the end of it, is it possible that all haircuts here are this laden with potentiality of sexual innuendo? I guess it doesnt matter, I looked great, I was beered up, and Groupon had one more ace in the hole. Sadly, I dont think Ill be back. Mostly because for haircuts, well--I just want my hair cut--and get the hell out of there. Might be my anxiety about aforementioned human interactions. Might be my aversion to having the worlds most awkward conversation while a woman with sharp metal utensils of death shears rapidly near your major jugulars. But ultimately it was because they spammed me after, and I dont care how pretty you bat your lashes at me, I despise spam. Sorry Charlies Angels! Fun to try!

Ive had two cuts at Hair M, both with the same stylist, Abbie, who does a superb job. The whole experience, from beginning to end, is excellent: The website is well laid out and easy to navigate; making an appointment is a snap; all staff are knowledgable, friendly and fun to deal with. The facility is inviting, well-appointed and impeccably clean. Services offered range from simple cuts to massage. Prices are reasonable. Customers are offered a wide choice of drinks... What more could you ask for? As I understand it, stylists at Hair M are rated according to years of experience, number of repeat customers, customer satisfaction comments, and training. The cost of a cut and/or other service depends on the level of the stylist you choose. I have only had a cut from Abbie, so I cant comment on any of the other stylists. I dont intend to get a cut from any of the others because Im very pleased with the work that Abbie does. Im not interested in the other services, so I cant comment on those, either. Since I moved to Portland fifteen years ago, Ive been looking for a good place to get my hair cut. Im not that fussy, but still... Im very glad to have found Hair M and am glad to give the highest recommendation as THE place for mens haircuts in Portland.

I love Hair M; can I just say that real quick? If any self respecting men havent been to this oasis of styling and massage, I have to ask why are they depriving themselves? Once you get there, they offer you a *free* local craft brew (two Widmer beers on tap including Rotator IPA, currently X-114). Youre greeted with a smile, ushered into the styling area, beer in hand, and the experience begins. I recommend the Emperor Cut which is their styled cut, shampoo and condition, warm towel, and scalp and hand massage. Fantastic! It’s wonderful to have this kind of treatment after a long day at the office, or before a weekend or vacation. Hair M gets my thumbs up at all angles. Well done ladies; well done!

Got a package here as a gift and it was quite nice. It was a little smaller than I expected from their website, but that wasnt really an issue. I drank a beer while waiting for my massage appointment (I might wait until after the massage next time as I had to pee half way through and wasnt as relaxing holding it) - but I enjoyed a nice 55 minute full body massage. Then I drank another beer while waiting for my hair cut and sat there in a very comfortable bliss. Both ladies that helped me were nice, professional, and easy on the eyes =] I scheduled a follow up hair cut as I really enjoyed the experience and services there.
