Ok, so if youre like me, car repairs scare you. It seems very easy for you to go in for a simple tire rotation or squeaky noise and come out with a myriad of other problems totaling a few hundred bucks. It makes you apprehensive of going ANYWHERE to get your vehicle looked at in fear that the auto shop is going to try and get as much money out of you as possible. And for most places, I would say thats EXACTLY what they do. Well, my issue was one involving a check engine light, which is scary to begin with. I had taken my Jeep Wrangler ALL OVER TOWN to various auto shops and no one could get that damn light to clear. Their answers? "Welp, it seems to be that the drive cycle isnt registering anything at the moment. Lets disconnect the battery and have you drive around for a few days and then come back to us and the codes should clear." Yeah ok, that never worked. So after going to several places and putting an extra 300 miles on my Jeep by driving it, I still had zero resolution. I was pissed off, frustrated and on the verge of lighting a match in the gas tank and walking away without looking at it, because we all know cool guys dont look at explosions and walk away slowly (usually while wearing sunglasses). After I decided that it wouldnt be financially saavy of me to blow up my Jeep, I finally came to Advanced Auto Repair under a recommendation from Jons EZ Lube off Massey St. Advanced Auto was actually right next to one of the crap places that looked at my Jeep previously. I wont call them out directly, but they are literally NEXT DOOR to Advanced Auto, so Ill let you do the math on that one. But anyway, there were 7 ERROR CODES that needed to clear so I could get my damn inspection done after 5 months of trying. I took it in and talked to Robert who was extremely cool and understanding of my frustration. He assured me they would find out what was wrong and asked if I wanted to get my inspection done as well when they found out what was wrong with it. Not IF they find out what was wrong with it, but WHEN. Sure enough, after 3 days of running tests on it, they found out it was the ESIM (EVAP System Integrity Module) that just needed to be replaced. After that, everything cleared and the inspection was complete. It was seriously that easy all along, just none of the other places took the time to break down the problem and figure it out. They also offered me a courtesy ride back to my apartment (which I dont know that I have ever had that offered before which was really awesome) and Robert was sure to call me every step of the way and tell me what the charges were going to be so that there were no surprises whatsoever. These guys are legit and do a fantastic job with no bullshit in between. I know this is a long review, but they really deserve all the credit they can get. Ill always recommend this place from here on out.

Beware the upsell. The staff was courteous and friendly, the shop is open on Saturdays (many are not), and they gave me a price quote within a day of my cars being in the shop. The staff seems genuinely professional, a throw-back, as other reviews have noticed. However, as others have noted, the quote I received was full of upsell. The mechanic recommended over $2,000 worth of repairs, which is at or over the listed value of the car. Admittedly, the car is old and has many issues, which the mechanic duly and rightly noted. When I requested that he give me an estimate for a bare-minimum repair to get the car running safely and pass inspection, the quote remained near $1,100. (These were done orally over the phone, so there may not be a written record of them). I took the car to another local shop, who did the repair for just over $400. The mechanic there, when shown the report from Advanced, was baffled as to how several of the "issues" in the ~$2,000 quote, specifically those regarding the fuel-injection system, could be diagnosed without a more time-intensive review than was possible (I dont necessarily believe or disbelieve this from the other mechanic; I simply report what he told me). To my mind and in my experience, Advanceds business model is to upsell its services, recommending expensive repairs which may or may not be necessary. This is a perfectly legitimate business practice that maximizes profits and likely does involve much preventive maintenance, particularly for newer cars. If money is no concern and you want a quick and what I presume would be effective repair from a local business with polite and professional employees, Advanced is your shop. The savvy customer may look elsewhere or for a second opinion, however.

The PITS. Brought car in to get an oil change, fix a wiper problem, repair/replace drivers side headlamp and repair rear window shade. They came up with a whole boatload of "needed" repairs and could never get my email replies to approve a small portion of their gigantic estimate. If I wanted to buy a car, I would have gone to a dealership. They said they couldnt fix the wiper issue - its a bizarre problem so I gave them a pass on that. But today, I am driving and it starts to rain. The wipers dont come on automatically. Okay, Ill just flip the switch. Wipers dont come on. This has never been a problem. Well, Im kind of nervous about driving now so pull into a parking lot at my earliest opportunity. There are NO WIPERS! NONE. Holy dangerous surprise, Batman! What am I going to do? Well, I drove home very slowly praying I dont have a wreck. Found after I am home, the freaking wipers are in the trunk. They said nothing. Not a word! Who does such a thing? Were they trying to kill me? After picking it up, I was unhappy, would not go there again but after this debacle with the wipers, decided it was time to give a negative review. Oh, they did do the oil change, did fax the back window shade, noticed no headlamp on the bill so checked that out before I left. So next day went back to my old reliable (but distant) shop to get it fixed so I can drive at night and not get pulled over! If you go there, make sure your car is in working order when you leave.

I believe Ben might be confused as to where he took his car to get a quote to be serviced. Even if hes not confused, does his experience still deserve a one star rating ?? He must not have been to very many auto repair shops. Thats too bad he took his car to Just Brakes. Its his loss. Doesnt everyone know a good mechanic is worth his weight in gold ! My 2000 Subaru has needed many repairs since Ive owned it, and Advanced Auto Repair was by far the best shop its been to. The service and repair work has always been excellent and the price has always been good. In fact, Ive recommended them to everyone I know who has car trouble. And momof2 is absolutely right. They dont treat anyone like theyre dumb. Heck, how many owners of buisnesses take time to investigate negative reviews or even read them at all ?? My guess is not many. I think that alone says alot about this shop. Sure, there are short sighted people who can only see the price tag in front of them. But there are also those of us who actually care about our cars. These are the people who are truly appreciative of a good mechanic and their labor. I want repairs to be done right. This is what they do. And Ive never found their prices to be unfair. I say this after many trips there and lots of experience. Im sure most people know how rare that is. No. I think Advanced Auto Repair should take great pride in the work they do. They have my buisness and my gratitude. An easy five stars.
