Not the best educational experience as far as esthetics goes. I began my education 5 years ago at a different educational institution that focused entirely on esthetics alone, but I stopped. Last year I wanted to pick up Esthetics again and I enrolled in the 1200 hour Master Esthetics Program at Paul Mitchell Salt Lake City. What a poor mistake on my part. I saved everything from my school in 2009. We had syllabuses actual in class and homework assignments, essays, vocabulary for each chapter to know terms and professional jargon, notes, tests, practical exams. The education was vastly different at Paul Mitchell, the other students didnt attend other schools in the past so I dont think they realize what a lack of education they were paying for. My education experience is as follows: I attended part time evening. Mondays consisted of usually having a class from a product rep (I got more education from reps then my own teachers) then 8:30 - 10 pm was "theory" we only worked out of the Miladys advanced Esthetics book when I know other schools implement both the fundamentals and advanced books. I suppose Paul Mitchell sees know reason to teach fundamentals. We would go through a slide show, was given a study guide for the test. Study guides/ tests were on average 20-25 questions long.... We were given the answers to the fill in the blank study guide. No assignments like labeling the anatomy of the face, no vocabulary, work book chapters werent even required to be done weekly, just by the time you graduate. Theres a completed work book that floats around that youll see girls about to graduate frantically copying out of. The rest of the week was kept wide open to do appointments on the paying public. If you didnt have an appointment, then you had nothin to do. I know students who spent their nights watching Netflix or off somewhere smoking weed. Service Practical assesments were a joke. My other schools would watch students like a hawk during practicals. And you would get docked for the smallest of mistakes. Not Paul Mitchell just tell the learning leader you have a practical exam on wherever the subject was and that you were about to preform it. I was rarely watched, I would even tell the teachers after i compelted I forgot I had a practical on my worksheet but I just did a service. No worried just hand them the paper to sign. All my practicals all 100% no feedback Students can attend full time from 8:30 am to 10pm on Tues, wed, an Thursday. There is no night school on fri and Saturday nights but you may attend during the day. And no day school on Mondays but day students cant attend night school that night which is theory and a repeat for them.which makes no sense to attend other than just to get hours quick. During "Fun raising season" all Paul Mitchells compete against each other to raise enough money for charity, at slc you could pay $10 to attend an hour and a half event. Game nights, Bingo Night, white trash prom, glow in the dark yoga, glow in the dark Easter egg hunt, Harry potte night, etc. you would get 5 hours educational credit for not doing a darn thing even educational related. 8 hours if you attended hockey games. Yeah they dont care about your level of education. They are money hungry. I got so fed up that I literally spent entire nights doing nothing and lack of education. I voiced my concerns to the then director of the skin academy. I was told that I need to bring in more appointments and then I would have something to do. Excuse me? I am a student not an employee. Its fantastic that so much time devoted to practice. But if you dont have an education and knowledge you dont have a competive edge in the market. I got fed up and quit going almost to 600 hours where I could be a basic esthetician assuming I could pass licensing. I was never approached and asked why I stopped. I just have a nice lovely bill for about $7,000. I will pay my government loans for the time I was at school. But it will be over my dead body before they get a cent from me for the full tuition

I went in to get an obre and got a girl who did not speak English well at all. Her learning leader asked me what I wanted and after explaining, he shot down every one of my ideas and would not even give me ideas. I am not a hairstylist, I do not know what colors will and will not work in my hair and he just stared at me blankly without giving me any ideas. I wish that I had gotten bree for a learning leader and not this guy who does not care about customers or his students. He said that we could do a Carmel looking brown fading into a redish brown starting below the ear. He told the student what to do but I do not think she listened to him. I feel that she did not saturate enough because she took the towel and dried off the color in my hair after applying it so the color looked dull and uneven. She damaged my hair while applying the color going in an upward motion leaving it extremely tangled after. She did not brush out my hair before applying color so she was pulling the knots out with the color already on it. The learning leader DID NOT come to check on us not once. Not even AFTER it was done. I watched him stand around talking to other learning leaders instead. After it was done my hair looked absolutely hideous. My roots were an extremely light brown color which I originally wanted on the bottom which I was told was not possible by the learning leader. It then did not fade into red, it went from light brown to dark red about 2 inches from my root. My stylist did not listen to me when I told her I did not want a ton of different gels and crap in my hair. The next learning leader told me I would have to pay the full $55 for this and could come back for them to fix it and turn it into just a full color which was free which I think was a rip off. If Im ending up with a full color, why pay $55 for a horrible obre which isnt an obre? I was NOT going to go back there and sit for another 4 hours to get my hair "fixed" by students who dont know what theyre doing and learning leaders who do not care about them or their customers. I will never come back to this school again. Taylor Andrews is a much better school. If you want perfect hair, see Tom at nights. He is AMAZING.

I really wish I could say I had a great experience, but I didnt. I know it is a school so I wasnt holding an unrealistic standard for the student doing my hair....it was the instructor who didnt meet professional standards by any means. She told the student to do a "box cut" on my hair...never have I had someone cut all my hair, straight across, in 5 cuts and NOT go back to section it off to make some corrections to make sure it was even. Then she talked me out of a color I know I could achieve, because Ive had it done before.... I would be ok with her trying to give me actual scientific facts as to why my hair couldnt go to the color I wanted, but it was literally her talking out of her ass with all of these made up reasons... She told me the photo I was showing her was photoshopped...(It was my own photo....) She came over with the swatches of color and showed me what she was thinking would work. I recommended a darker color because I wanted it to match my natural (dark brown)...the color she was showing me was kind of light, but she said it would layer over the color I already had and turn a little darker...I knew it wouldnt, and IT DIDNT. The student was a great guy and seemed passionate about what he was doing..so he isnt to blame. He was really new into the program, so I would think that the instructor would be way more attentive and hands on. I get that they have to help everyone, but you cant just half ass everyone! She came over to asses his work..gave me an earful about how amazing the color was..said how great my cut was... just took her scissors to the bottom of my hair for like 5 seconds to loosen up the ends and sent me on my way. When I got home, my hair was literally the same color and I had to fix my hair! There were so many long strands that were not even cut to match my new length. and it was all around crooked and uneven! really not a fantastic experience.. Wish I would have remembered the instructors name..But she is short, with short dark brown curly hair...
