I can understand why Merrifield’s ratings are so low. Merrifield was the failure point for a package sent to me from Germany. All post office transactions from Germany to Merrifield were handled timely and successfully. Leave it to Merrifield to fail to deliver it the last 35 miles to Warrenton Va. I signed up for emailed tracking notifications on this package. As I tracked this package on the USPS web site, they posted every day for a week that it was on its way to Warrenton, yet Meriffield threw it in a rejection bin to be sent back to Germany. I asked why and Veenu said she would look into it and call me back. She never did. I called several times and let I ring 15 times and they never picked up. Once I did get through Veenu asked if she could put me on hold for 5 minutes so she could retrieve an image of the item. 4 minutes later she picked up and said hi, may I help you ? What an irresponsible way to handle business and treat customers. They didnt notify me so I called them on July 2nd to find all this out. The contents were 2 knobs for bicycle shocks. Nothing questionable. The USPS tracking history pasted from the USPS site is provided below. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- June 26, 2015 , 3:28 am Departed USPS Facility MERRIFIELD, VA 22081 Your item departed our USPS facility in MERRIFIELD, VA 22081 on June 26, 2015 at 3:28 am. Do NOT go to this post office about getting a passport. Since this was the closest post office to where I lived, I figured itd be a perfect choice for getting a passport. I went through the US State Departments automated phone system to try to make an appointment, but I could not find it. So, not knowing the phone number for the post office, I went there and got an appointment for two weeks later (they were very crowded). So, I called a different post office the next day, got an appointment for the day after, and everything went fine there. Once I actually needed to call the post office to cancel my appointment, I found that that was impossible. They simply did not pick up their phone. So I tried a few days later, on a Tuesday around 11 AM. No answer. I walked there with the phone in my hand. The call lasted fifteen minutes and there was no answer throughout it (not even an answering machine). Once I got to the passport office there, I spoke with the person there and cancelled my appointment. I remarked to the person behind the desk that their phone was ringing and put my phone on speaker. They acted like it simply wasnt their responsibility; like it was some other departments job. Now thats worrying. The fact that the people in the passport office do not consider making appointments to be a part of their job leads me to believe that there is some crucial incompetency or organizational issue that prevents people from picking up the phone at all. The person behind the desk was doing some paperwork, but answering a call to make an appointment takes less than five minutes. So, in summary, do NOT go here for a new passport. They will likely not take your call meaning youll have to either go there in person to make an appointment (and go there in person again for your appointment) or just choose another post office. I recommend the latter. The place I went to got me a really convenient appointment time and I was out of there in less than 30 minutes.

If I could give this post office a negative score I would. Ive been going to this particular post office since I was very young because its close to me and my parents deliver packages from there. Honestly I never really complained about the lines or anything but today changed that. I needed to renew my passport and my family and I chose to arrive at opening around 9am. However upon opening, we were soon shocked to see that the office had already reached its maximum takers and we were turned away. Apparently the office had decided to open an hour early and let in the people waiting, which caused the spots to fill quickly. The day before, we found that the hours for the passport office were not even easy to access. On weekdays this location opens at 13 and closes at 2, which is not advertised on its website. ANOTHER misleading aspect, they dont take online reservations like they say they will, which was very inconvenient. Moving along, many of the people who were in line had questions about the renewal and application process, and instead of being polite and patient with the customers who dont understand, the staff responded with snarky comments like "thats a stupid question" and "why are you here". The room used to take care of these needs is small, stinky and stuff which leaves you with a pounding headache to deal with while you wait. I would NOT reccomend coming here for your passport needs, but rather take the time to drive out to Alexandria and take care of your needs (on Queen St.) They are kind and caring, and honestly the atmosphere is quite pleasant. The lines arent too long here and even if they were, I wouldnt mind because its spacious and the staff is so friendly. Quite the contrast to Merrifield, especially since I vividly remember getting my first passport and seeing two families fighting in line and causing a commotion while the staff did nothing.

Edit I went back a week after and got there at 0800 instead of closer to when they open at 0900. Even though I got there an hour early, it was number 82. They took 100 while I was there which was great news for me. After we got our first number, we went into the office and got a second one. Then we were told to squeeze against the wall and wait for them to give us instructions. It took until 0930 for them to actually start processing applications. They were a bit rough and not very kind during this part but I think they were overwhelmed. You must fill the application with black ink only, despite it not saying that anywhere on the form. They have extras for you but they ran out and had to print more which took a while. Do note that you cannot have a passport photo showing any teeth and if you do they will make you retake your photo and charge you $15 for one photo. Since I was number 82, I went to Costco on West Ox and got new photos instead for 4 for $5. It took me around an hour to do that and when I got back, they were still only on #23. Itd be nice if they could put all this info online (since the department of state website says you can show teeth as long as its natural). Overall, the entire process is really slow. I didnt get to process my application until 1300. Once they called my number, my entire time talking to someone was 6 minutes. I think customers make this process extremely slow. The workers photocopy peoples birth certificates and licenses for people who dont do it ahead of time which is frustrating when you have done so like the application says to. Overall, my experience wasnt positive but I think the workers truly as trying their hardest. Its just a crappy process that needs to be fixed. Previous review: Wish I could give zero stars. They dont take passport appointments. They stopped taking passport applications before opening. How lousy.
