My wifes car was making some thumping noises while braking, and it was also making a squealing noise while idling. We saw that Currys was a AAA approved shop, and since its close to our home we thought wed give it a shot. We took the car in for an estimate, and they called later that day with a price tag of $1600: basically replacing the front and rear brakes completely, and replacing the alternator and serpentine belt. Since my wifes car (99 coupe) probably isnt worth $1600 total itself, I scoffed at the estimate and took it to a different shop at the recommendation of a friend. Heres where the plot takes a twist, and why Im giving Curry only 1 star. As I drove the car from Currys to the new auto repair shop, the car just felt off to me; something wasnt right. I didnt think much of it though, and left it at the new shop for them to take a look. When they called later that afternoon, there were two interesting nuggets of information: 1) The brake rotors needed to be cleaned because something had gotten on them and was sticky, leading to the thumping (due to friction) when braking at low speeds. THATS ALL FOLKS. Total cost: less than $50 in labor. 2) It was hard for the new shop to properly evaluate the alternator, since Currys NEVER PUT THE SERPENTINE BELT BACK ON. The car had felt weird to me because I had no power steering. Awesome. Luckily it was me driving the car and not my wife, and I made it without incident to the new shop. Oh, and the alternator ended up being perfectly fine and it was just the belt that needed to be replaced, which was under $100 total for parts and labor. So, to sum up, instead of actually repairing/replacing what was needed, Currys tried to sell my wife and I on fixing every possible component related to the actual problem. Why clean the brake rotor when you can replace the entire braking system? Why replace the belt when you can replace the alternator too? Dont worry, well give you 5% off for being a AAA member! Thanks, but no thanks. I cant comment on the actual quality/capabilities of Currys, because Ive had no work performed by them on my vehicles. Perhaps the $1600 quote was reasonable for the parts/services that would have been provided (though Im sure its on the high side), but those parts/services were completely unnecessary. My wifes car has been driving perfectly for the last year+ since this series of events, and it cost less than $150 for the necessary repairs. The second shop even remembered to put the serpentine belt back on; such gentlemen, I know. To sum it up: avoid Currys at all costs.

Ive been putting off writing this review, because, well... I am disappoint. Basically, Id taken my car in there for a noise caused by the brakes and to get a State Inspection... pretty surprising since Id gotten my brakes and rotors replaced the year before (by Currys). In thirty minutes I went from trying to get a state inspection to hearing the (nice) staff at Currys telling me that my 2 front calipers has seized the brakes onto the rotors destroying all components in the process... the price tag? A whopping $900 ($500 in labor / $400 in parts). Now Im SURE Currys hears these "OMG, Currys failed my car on inspection so Im mad and Im going to write a bad review and have a pity party all over their yelp account" reviews, but thats not what Im trying to do here. If my car doesnt pass inspection, thats my fault. But when my car doesnt pass inspection and a shop tries to charge me hundreds of dollars just because they think Im an ignorant woman who only knows how to fill up a gas tank, I have to lay down the law (and by law, I mean Yelp review). I just want to let others know when I feel like a mechanics shop is actually trying to rip me off.... I hold Jiffy Lube and Sears to the same standards... and Currys gets no free passes just because theyre local. Im pretty well-connected with the local car world, so I took the whip to a friend. We took the wheels off and then the (still good-to-go) calipers to reveal two gloriously unscathed rotors - not even the least bit worn. I replaced the brake pads (a whopping $30 from Autozone) and in less than a half hour, wed gotten the car back together - no squeaking or squealing... no ruined rotors (like Currys had claimed) and no replaced calipers (they still have another good year left in them). I have pictures to back everything. Now the final test to prove if Currys had truly attempted to pull the wool over my eyes would be to get my car reinspected (at a different shop of course). If the car failed again, then I would apologize to Currys for any doubt, BUT if the shop passed my car, then it would confirm that Currys had indeed tried to take me for $900 bucks. My cars passed.... the inspector even had to ask me why it had failed because he could not find anything wrong. Cliffs: Currys boasts of "best local car shop in DC" when in reality, theyre no better than the Jiffy Lube down the street. Honesty, folks, is the best policy. Making a quick buck off a chick you *think* doesnt understand the difference between the check engine light and the seat belt light will NOT pay off in the long run.

I suggest reading Heather Miracles review down below. Currys tried to pull the same "state inspection/broken calipers/repair will cost you $1000" scam with me. Thankfully, I too got a second opinion that confirmed that nothing was wrong with my calipers. I saved myself a lot of money by *not* listening to Currys, but wish that I had avoided the hassle from the outset. Upshot: Please save yourself the time and money and *dont* take you car to Currys in Falls Church. If you ignore this advice, please dont spend a single penny there without getting a second opinion--the management of this company is not trustworthy, and youll only have yourself to blame if you spend money here without a second opinion. If I could give this company 0 stars, I would. Longer story: I took my car here for a routine state inspection. I have never failed a state inspection, have not had any car trouble, and keep my car well-maintained, so wasnt expecting my state inspection at Currys to be anything other than routine. Instead, I got a call saying that everything was fine except that my rear calipers "were slightly sticky, but still had life in them." The cost to repair them would be $998.40, and Currys said my car failed inspection until they were fixed. [Note: Thankfully they quoted me a price of almost $1000--a price high enough that red flags were raised. If theyd said a lower price, I might have paid it without questioning... money that would have been wasted.] I got two additional opinions (another state inspector, and a second company that specializes in brake repair but doesnt perform state inspections), and--after thorough examinations--neither could find anything wrong with my calipers. Those companies said that my car did need new brake pads and rotors (which cost $335--money that would have gone to Currys if Currys had dealt honestly with me) and subsequently passed inspection. For those who arent car experts, you need to be able to trust those who are to help you stay safe. Currys has proven themselves time and again unworthy of your trust. Please, there are better companies right down the street (Valvoline, Sunoco) that are trustworthy and perform the same functions that Currys does.
